Areas of Specialization
I offer a wide range of psychiatric services tailored to meet the unique needs of each individual. My goal is to use the least invasive, yet most effective approaches in improving your overall quality of life. Here is an example of some of the disorders and issues I treat:
Anxiety and OCD
Anxiety disorders include generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and separation anxiety disorder. These are commonly diagnosed in children and adults and sometimes more than one anxiety disorder is present at the same time. Accurate evaluation can reveal the presence of one or more of these anxiety disorders and the best course of treatment. Obsessive compulsive disorder is a unique disorder that can mimic multiple psychiatric disorders. It is often missed on evaluations or misdiagnosed as a different psychiatric disorder. Due to specific treatment requirements, accurate diagnosis is vital.
Depression and other mood disorders
Depression is not just sadness. It can take different shapes and forms and varies in presentation from one person to another and can look very different in a child versus an adolescent versus an adult. As many as 17% of people experience depression at some point in their lives. It can lead to impairment in school and work performance, family and social life as well as daily routines and more. It is crucial to accurately diagnose it through a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation to form an individualized treatment plan and differentiate it from other mood disorders like Bipolar disorder which is treated very differently.
ADHD
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is present in both children and adults. When untreated, it can lead to impairment in academics, work, relationships, friendships, athletics, social engagement, and more. When most people think of ADHD, they think of focusing problems. For people living with ADHD, it means a lot more. There are many reasons for inattention and a comprehensive evaluation is required to determine if the reason for the inattention is ADHD or better explained by something else.
Aggression and behavioral concerns
Disruptive behavior disorders including oppositional defiant disorder are the most common reason for child psychiatry evaluations. They can be a stand alone issue or due to an underlying psychiatric disorder. Treatment is often behavioral but can include medications if there are co-occurring psychiatric disorders, most commonly ADHD. With careful evaluation, treatment can dramatically improve family dynamics as well as relationships at school and academic performance. and with siblings at
Life transitions
Life transitions, such as relocation, marriage, divorce, parenthood, career change, job loss, family crisis, death, retiring, can trigger or exacerbate mental health issues like anxiety, depression, irritability, and mood swings due to the stress of adapting to new situations. Navigating life transitions can be a challenging but transformative experience. By understanding the impact of change on mental health, building resilience, and seeking support when needed, a person can emerge from these periods stronger and more equipped to face future challenges.
Psychosis
Psychosis refers to a collection of symptoms that affect the mind, where there has been some loss of contact with reality. During an episode of psychosis, a person’s thoughts and perceptions are disrupted and they may have difficulty recognizing what is real and what is not. Comprehensive and thorough evaluation of the signs and symptoms is critical in developing an individualized treatment plan including not only medications but also therapy, life style modifications and learning new skills to improve quality of life.
